Tim Donaghy is a former NBA referee whose career came to a halt due to a notorious 2007 gambling scandal that sent shockwaves throughout the league. Growing up inspired by his father’s officiating, Donaghy began refereeing in the CBA before joining the NBA in 1994, where he officiated 772 regular-season and 20 playoff games over 13 years.
In 2007, an FBI investigation revealed that he bet on NBA games, including those he officiated, and shared insider tips with gamblers linked to organized crime. Donaghy pleaded guilty to wire fraud and betting-related charges, citing gambling addiction and coercion. Sentenced to 15 months in prison in 2008, he served 11 months and was banned from the NBA for life.
The scandal prompted league-wide officiating reforms. Post-release, Donaghy authored “Personal Foul” (2009), consults on sports integrity, and appeared in Netflix’s 2022 “Untold: Operation Flagrant Foul”, discussing the scandal’s impact.
